Reboot for UK's 'oldest' computer

Britain's oldest original computer, the Harwell, which was designed in 1949, first ran in 1951 and lasted until 1973, is being sent to the National Museum of Computing where it is to be restored to working order.
Officially it was to help with general background atomic theory and to assist in the development of civilian power.
The system was built and used by staff at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell, Oxfordshire.
Built by a team of three people, the device was capable of doing the work of six to ten people and ran for seven years until the establishment obtained their first commercial computer.

Microsoft blocked from selling Word!!!

A federal district court judge has ruled against Microsoft, and told the software company it must stop selling Word in the United States.
The world's most popular word processor is the subject of a court case brought by Toronto-based i4i over Word's ability to open files containing custom XML. i4i has the patent for "customized XML," which has been the default format for Word files since the 2007 edition.

Microsoft will appeal the decision.

Story Posting Guide

This guide is intended to help LUG members in posting stories on the LinuxBahrain website. Stories are a type of content that will appear on the homepage and these are some examples of the type of content that might be posted as a story:

  • news: for example Google releasing new OS. This can be anything from a few sentences and a link to a lengthy discussion on the news item.
  • howtos: all sorts of guides and howtos are welcome with screen shots, code snippets, attached scripts configuration files. It can be as basic or as advanced as you would like.
  • opinions: For example a discussion on the future of Linux, or what makes a great Linux Distro
  • reviews: articles on trying out software, hardware or devices. Doesn't have to be detailed even a short blurb with a screenshot and a link to the application's project page.

there are also some recommended guidelines to follow when posting stories:

  • copy paste: don't copy paste a whole article as is from another website into LinuxBahrain. It is better to write a few sentences introducing the other sites article and put a link to that site. Alternatively you might summarise or comment on the other article in your own words and provide a link to the original article.
  • story icons: or as they are called in drupal attached image. You should try and always use one it can be any image related to the story you are posting if you can't find one or don't have the time there are some generic story icon images in the website that you can use.

Before posting any stories on the site I highly recommend viewing this video as it will help a lot. Feel free to contact me or post questions on the websites discussion forums if you have any questions or need help. download video: low resolution (17.7 MB) - high resolution (29.8 MB)
