September 2007 Meeting - LinuxConf Europe 2007

   I'm pleased to announce that we will have our monthly LUG meeting this Saturday 8th September. Which is of course the second Saturday of the month. I'm emailing you this announcement from Cambridge, England where I'm attending the LinuxConf Europe 2007 conference. This meeting I will make a presentation about all the interesting people and technologies I saw at LinuxConf. The location and time will be the usual, Dar Al-Bareh cofee shop 4pm.

LUG August Meeting

we are happy to announce the third LUG meeting will be held this Saturday the 18th of August at 4P.M., at Dar Al Bareh Cafe in Adliya. If you need directions to the cafe there is a map here We will have the following presentation
 

Nokia N800: Real Linux Power in your Pocket

  • Presenter: Marwan Al-Sabbagh
  • Presentation Type: Technical Presentation
  • Summary: The N800 is a Linux based Internet Tablet that has e-mail, web, skype, radio, image viewer, and a tonne of other software that can easily be installed on it. Under the hood it's running Debian Linux and GTK as it's GUI framework.
    • Hardware Summary: The hardware specs and features. Wireless, bluetooth, upto 16GB of memory card, 800×480 screen.
    • Movie Playback: full length full screen smooth movie playback.
    • VNC: both viewer and server
    • NES Emulator: play any Nintendo game of your choice, including Super Mario Bros.
    • Web Browser: opera and firefox with flash player 9.
    • Bluetooth Keyboard: demo of comfortable foldable bluetooth keyboard
    • X Terminal: vi, bash, ls, all that CLI fun!
    • SSH client and server: connect to and from the n800
    • Cool Projects: Connect n800 to your car engine, apache, mysql, python, doom, and other cool n800 apps and projects, WiMax on the n800

Wireless Fun!

Well the second LUG Meeting was tonnes of fun, we had a very lively discussion about the really awesome DD-WRT wireless router software. As promised I've posted all the links and notes that I'd mentioned in the presentation on the wiki over here

First Meeting was a Great Success

Firstly, we'd like to thank everyone for attending and creating such a great atmosphere. It was an excellent start to the Bahrain LUG. I've posted a bunch of items after our meeting, and they are as follows:

  • Members List: list of members with their photos and a brief write up about themselves. I posted my favorite distro and apps on mine :)

First Meeting

We are pleased to announce the first meeting of the Bahrain Linux User Group!

LUG Activities

Sharing Knowledge: Presentations, Demos, Howtos. Cool and useful applications, tools, and software techniques in Linux and the open source world.
Support: Helping users to install, run and maintain Linux as well as troubleshooting hardware and software problems (as low as that might be!).
Socializing: Share, laugh, get geeky, and have fun!
Taste of forthcoming activities:

  • Running Linux within Windows: vmware, qemu, colinux, cygwin, xming
  • Running windows within Linux: wine, qemu, vmware
  • More secure and reliable internet: ssh proxy
  • Cool Linux Devices: Linux routers, handhelds, PS3, tiny devices (Nokia N800, dd-wrt router)

The first LUG meeting will be held on Saturday 9 June 2007 at 4PM, at Dar Al Bareh Cafe in Adliya. For directions click here.
