Marwan Al-SabbaghI currently work as a developer at Kuwait Finance House, where I love building applications on LAMP(Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP). I first tried out Linux in 1999, Slackware on some floppy disks. Then I used Redhat, Mandrake, and tried Suse and Ubuntu. And I use CentOS, a community version of Redhat Enterprise Linux, on the servers at work and Ubuntu from my desktops and laptops. Mohamed AlothmanGreeting Earthlings.... I'm a faculty member at the Department of Physics, University of Bahrain and currently the chairman of the department. I hold a Ph.D. in Astronomy and my research area is space physics, specifically, magnetospheric physics and the radiation belts. I started playing with computers in 1984 with a BBC micro model B (32 kB RAM) and have been using linux since 1994. I started with slackware & went thru several distros, redhat caldera, SUSE, mandrake, etc. I use modeling as my research tool, thus I basically write code and do some satellite data analysis. One of the project I'm working on is building a Beowulf system: a parallel machine using linux & MPI. Live long and prosper.... Favorite Applications: Fortran (any comment, come & see me), Emacs, ghostview, LaTeX, firefox, Tgif, gnuplot, PySol :)Favorite Linux Distribution: fedora |

Rabayah, RakanWell I started using Linux around Ubuntu 7.04 and I liked it so I decided to continue on using it. Even though I find OS X to be around decades in advance I still find Linux to be catching up to much of Windows technology. Since 7.10 the first Ubuntu Distribution that I used there have been many noticeable improvements and I think Linux can't be silenced for long. Today I see that Linux is part of everyone's life. Whether its using programs that are under the GNU license's or open-source projects such as Firefox, OpenOffice.org and many other things, Linux is always going to get attention from all these applications. I found that most OS X users will know about Linux because of the similar UNIX architecture's, and I don't think Apple can really silence them for long. Favorite Applications: Gnome-Do + Docky ,Google Chrome, Thunderbird, Banshee, Rakarrak, Wine, CrossOver Games, and Microsoft Office 2007 under Wine.Favorite Linux Distribution: Ubuntu Website: rakan21.blogspot.com |

Trevor PrendergastI'm an IT Tutor at Bahrain Polytechnic. I am living in Bahrain since August 2009 and loving every minute of it. I have been using Linux since way back in the days of Slackware. I recall feeding about 15-20 3.5" floppy disks into my very speedy 486-DX33 and being amazed at MWM in all it's glory. I have also used Linux in a professional capacity when working as an Oracle consultant over the past number of years. I am now the proud owner of an N900 (thanks Marwan) and will hopefully start developing some apps/widgets over the next couple of months. Favorite Linux Distribution: Ubuntu - only because the Live CD allowed me to use my 3G dongle without problems |

David van VyfeykenI started with Linux back in 1993. My first distro was SLS (Softlanding Linux System). I have a background in electronics. And that was the mean reason for me to buy my first computer. I got it cheap because it was broken. After fixing it I installed MS-DOS. I didn't have much use for MS-Windows at that time. Then a friend downloaded SLS from the University network. That changed my life completely. If it wasn't for Linux I would not be in computers today. William RendleIT professional from the UK, moved to Bahrian in mid May 2011. First used RedHat whilst at university and have tried many of the flavours since. Currently like Ubuntu and have more recently been playing around with my netbook / hackintosh. Work generally seems to be MS based which I am certified for, but keen to take on new challenges. This will be my first networking group since arriving in the country three weeks ago. Hello to all and look forward to meeting you all at next month’s meeting.
