LUG May 2010 Meeting - Non-relational databases and noSQL data stores

Our next LUG meeting will be on 4:00PM Saturday, May 8th at the Al Ayam Media Center(for directions see Al Ayam Media Center Directions). the topic will be as follows:

Non-relational databases and noSQL data stores

Non-relational databases and noSQL data stores gained a lot of momentum recently with their adoption by mega websites like facebook.com, digg.com, amazon.com, and google.com among several others. They are used to store and present the millions of media files and social interactions that are posted on these websites which run on off-the-shelf commodity server hardware yet manage to serve millions of users from all over the world. The presentation will explain these non-relational databases, sometimes called document-oriented databases, in comparison to relational database management systems like Oracle, MS SQL, and MySQL, the De facto standards in enterprise data storage. As an example, Apache CouchDB will be used to showcase the paradigms of storing, retrieving, and maintaining documents in a non-relational database, with detailed screen walk-through and sample codes. Business scenarios for the utilization of such systems will also be explored with the audience.  The presenter is Hasan Al Shehabi, development manager of BBK's e-banking systems.
